Introduction to the Castle

When Robert Taylor visited the area in the 1730s, he must have been sufficiently impressed with the stunning views that were afforded on Mount Prospect he decided to build his home here, which he called Prospect House. From this distance of years, it is still not hard to imagine the dramatic landscape in the early years, before the advent of the railway as the hillside sloped softly towards the sea, where the Mountains of Mourne could be easily appreciated to the north. Halfway down this hill he would build his home, which we now call Ardgillan Castle, the name having already been in existence as the land is called Ardgillan on the Down Survey map of 1653.
