Gardens In Season

Gardens In Season

Ardgillan Castle holds many outdoor events with a keen focus on the beautiful and meticulous gardens that we have at Ardgillan. Our Head Gardener, Dominica McKevitt will be delivering a series of garden tours throughout the year to showcase the changing seasons in the gardens. This will give participants the opportunity to enjoy the garden all year round and learn about the work that goes into maintaining a garden of this size.

Winter Garden

The winter has left the gardens at Ardgillan looking stark and enchanting. With the passing of the season we can now see life starting to return. An array of shrubs and flowers, many of which are emanating a beautiful fragrance are growing within the gardens, making it a great time to come and explore.

The winter colour and fragrance is amazing, the autumn season stayed beyond its time and some autumn owers are still with us adding to the winter colour. There is lots of colour from evergreen, gold and variegated foliage. From Pittosporum, Elaeagnus, Myrtus and Photinia.

There is still a good display of daffodils/Narcissus and many other spring flowering bulbs including tulips, dwarf specious tulips, Hyacinths, Chionodoxa and Anemone.

Mid-Summer Garden

Ardgillan’s summer gardens are looking spectacular. Summer is a great time to relax and enjoy the gardens. The rose garden is just past its peek but is still looking a highlight of our summer gardens. The herbaceous border, is displaying a magnicent array of colour, with Campanula London Anna, Phloxs, Nepeta (Cat Mint), Geraniums and many others in full ower with more to bloom over the next few months. But stealing the show on the herbaceous border is the Onapordium Accantium (Cotton Thistle), standing at a dramatic 8ft x 4ft and silver in colour. It really is a show-stopper.

Late Summer Garden

The ornamental areas in the walled garden are looking good with the penstemons on the scree bed particularly striking. The additional bed in the potentilla garden has Nemesia one of my favourite flowers and will have a display of Lilies soon hopefully followed by Chrysanthemums.

The herb garden has an ever expanding collection, with 10 different varieties of thyme and mint and nearly as many different varieties of sage and oregano. The vegetable garden is producing well, and there is going to be a bountiful crop of fruit this year. Ardgillan’s summer gardens are looking spectacular.

Late Autumn Garden

Dahlias are making a great display in the walled garden and adding beautiful colour to the herbaceous border. Many different varieties of Dahlia are creating an outstanding display.
