SACRED GEOMETRY DRAWING CLASS

Participants will use compasses and a ruler, along with a step-by-step drawing processes to construct beautiful geometric patterns. These drawn patterns contain symmetries found in the natural world, such as in flowers, as well as in the planetary movements of our solar system. Although primarily a practical drawing class, there will also be various beautiful PowerPoint presentations focusing upon geometry in nature and the wider cosmos. The whole session, from start to finish, will focus upon the spiritual meaning and symbolism conveyed by geometry and pattern and how, for millennia, it has been understood, in sacred art and architecture – as well as within religious and philosophical ideas, the world over – as something that
expresses and embodies the eternal, the unchanging and the beautiful.

Tom Bree is a specialist in the use of geometry in sacred art and philosophy. He teaches practical drawing classes both in person and online. Tom studied Sacred Geometry under Professor Keith Critchlow at the Prince’s School of Traditional Arts in London and has taught at the school since 2008. He has also taught at many other places including the Prince’s Teaching Institute, The British Museum, Wells Cathedral, The Chalice Well, Schumacher College, West Dean College, Morley College, and the Royal West of England Drawing School. Tom spent twelve years analysing the use of geometry, cosmology and cosmic mythos in the design of the first English Gothic Cathedral – in the city of Wells in the UK. The research was eventually published in his book The Cosmos in Stone – Sacred Geometry of a Master Mason.
Tom’s approach to teaching places a particular emphasis upon the spiritual meaning of geometry and cosmology along with the contemplative significance of the physical engagement in the drawing process. No previous experience is required.
